I qualified as a nurse in 1993 and specialised to work in oncology (cancer). Since then I have worked with cancer patients for almost 30 years, partly in the clinical setting – inpatients and outpatient chemo - and partly in research. For the last few years I have worked on studies which are looking how being physically active can help people with a cancer diagnosis to cope with their cancer and with their treatment and then with continuing to live with that cancer diagnosis.
After qualifying as a level 3 Personal Trainer (PT) I went on to do the level 4 PT course in Cancer Rehabilitation and Exercise (CanRehab). I now work as a PT both generally and for people affected by cancer.
There is an increasing amount of research which suggests that being physically active after a cancer diagnosis can be beneficial in many ways:
There is also some emerging evidence suggesting that being physically active may also play a role in cancer prevention and prevention of recurrence.
SafeFit has been designed, in response to COVID-19, to support people living with cancer to maintain and improve their physical and emotional wellbeing, whilst following Government guidelines.
SafeFit is a free remote trial for anyone in the UK with suspicion of, or confirmed diagnosis of, cancer.
You can refer yourself via the SafeFit website and will be put in contact with a cancer exercise specialist who will help you during the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.
